The Queen in the Dance Party is comprised of 17 short stories from Singapore-born, American-raised writer Mary Dennis. The zine, published by Elk, encompasses a time in the author’s life when she has just moved to Beijing, in the hopes of learning Chinese, which is being funded by her grandmother, in the hopes that she marry a “nice Chinese man.” Honest and often humorous in the small details of everyday life, Dennis captures her time in Beijing as an outsider perfectly, with situations relatable to anyone who has ever felt alone in a new place. Ranging from a failed trip to Tiananmen Square to hanging at Chinese death metal shows, these true stories are sure to captivate. Hopefully you’ll be as psyched as I was to find such beautiful writing in a zine!

Total Control!

A few weeks ago, Australia-based Total Control played at Soft Approach, during Olneyville's epic night of music. Currently on tour with Thee Oh Sees, Total Control played a tight set, filled with tunes off their debut album which was released this summer. Electronic-based punk with a shoe-gazer vibe, this band would definitely be worth checking out again.

Girl Talk zine is seeking submissions for issue #13: the girl culture issue! I know what youre thinking, isn't every issue about girl culture? Yes, but this one is going to be more awesome! Isn't that kind of essentialist? No it's just aiming to be a celebration of things that make being a girl in a girl's world so amazing. Here are some suggestions to get the creative juices flowing (get it?):

*stories about yr favorite female pasttimes (i.e. getting high and putting on your bffs makeup for hours, discussing the pros and cons of the diva cup, ETC.)
*visual representations of what girl culture means to you (could perhaps be a photo of your friends dressed as feminist icons?)
*historical essays on amazing things done by womyn in relation to womyn's lives (like starting a feminist zine so your friends have something awesome to read?!)
*reviews of albums, books, websites, etc. that have helped make your lyfe as a grrrl better, funner, easier (rookiemag.com anyone?)

I'm super excited to see all submissions - which can of course be sent to girltalkzine at gmail. Deadline is approximately Dec. 31st for a January release party TBD (sleepover party?!) Fun!

A piece on my ultimate female role model is featured in the latest edition of Girl Gang Zine. The zine is "a homemade publication filled with inspiring girls" and is co-edited by Maren, whose blog is gorgeous. You can check out more photos of the zine and other ephemera here. If you want to know who my role model is, you'll have to place a pre-order (the first edition has sold out!) This is totally worth ordering, it is beautifully assembled and is full of awesome illustrations and interviews. Each issue comes with a minizine and a risographed poster! Filmmaker Sini Anderson is making a documentary about Kathleen Hanna. You have 4 days left to contribute to the making of The Punk Singer on Kickstarter. In case there is any confusion about why you would want to do this, check out the video Sini made, which offers a sneak peek of the film. For as little as 5 bones, you can be a vital part of feminist history! The work that Kathleen Hanna has done is so important to me (and tons of other cool peeps duh) that I can't even express it in words b/c they wouldn't do any justice. Luckily, Sini is putting it into film so we don't have to express it lol. Beyond excited to see the finished product!

The fabulous For the Birds feminist collective of NYC is hosting a series of rad events this summer. Super bummed that I'm missing Big Mouth, a feminist art show featuring Adee Roberson, Kathleen Hanna + more, which is having a panel/closing party tomorrow. Be sure to check out the rest of their events this summer, hopefully I will be able to make it down for one of them!

Amigos will be also tabling at AS220's Foo Fest this Saturday August 13th. We will be hosting a zine swap and offering free DIY Gocco prints by artist Derek Aylward. If you have never used a Gocco before, you are in for a treat! We will also be selling some choice items for the shop. So come on by, we'll be there from 1 to about 5:30. I'll be swapping some old Girl Talks for sure!

Do yourself a favor and read this excerpt from the fabulous Mindy Kaling's upcoming book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? I love the title, it reminds me of how psychotic i was about missing good times when i was in high school (so much so that it was my pet peeve in the yearbook.) I especially enjoyed the piece on Best Friend Rights & Responsibilities - very true, but be careful it may make you a little teary-eyed.

In other news, I'm super-excited to check out The TropiGals, "a neoburlesque troupe" that my pal/GT contributor Rachel has just joined. They've got a performance coming up in Providence, you can see the deets here.

Super excited about this new website, Hello Giggles, created by the talented ladies Zooey Deschanel, Sophia Rossi and Molly McAleer (who we interviewed back in issue 10). They describe the site as "the ultimate entertainment destination for smart, independent and creative females." Sounds awesome, be sure to check out their first video!

Update: In my excitement, I just started reading Sophia Rossi's tumblr and came across this line from a post about the Babysitter's Club that I just had to share: "Also, on a sidenote how important are babysitters. Babysitters are like cooler younger teachers who ignore you just the right amount to make you think they are superheros." It kills me how insightful some people can be. Mad insightful.

books i read recently

I recently read GRRRLS: Viva Rock Divas by Amy Raphael. This book focuses on a dozen women in rock circa the early 90's (the book was published in 1996) including Courtney Love, Liz Phair, Kim Gordon and others both well-known and lesser-known. Raphael is/was a UK-based music journalist so she also includes members of Sister George, Echobelly and Pam Hogg who wouldn't be as obvious to US readers. The book is cool/unique in that Raphael introduces the musician, then each chapter proceeds in sections exclusively in the artist's own words. By the end of the book, it becomes clear that Raphael asked artists the same questions, but it's cool to see what these women were saying about themselves and "women in rock" in general at a time when angry grrrl rockers were getting plenty of attention. I recommend it if you're an obsessive of the time period (as I tend to be).

I also definitely recommend reading this autobiography from the one and only Ronnie Spector. Very interesting info on her childhood, the Ronettes beginnings and her torturous marriage to Phil Spector. The book was originally published in 1991 (there is now an updated version) so unfortunately it didn't include any info on her collaborations with Kill Rock Stars, which I am super interested in. I'd be curious to know if the new version has anything on this?? In general, this book was a pretty quick read, somewhat gossipy (and who wouldnt want to gossip with Ronnie Spector?), and gave a really good sense of the times the Ronettes came up in. The Ronettes were the only girl group to tour with the Beatles AND the Rolling Stones. SO BADASS. Ronnie Spector 4 lyfe.

The Disposable Woman

Great op-ed in the NYT today by Anna Holmes, creator of Jezebel. I haven't followed this Charlie Sheen business very closely, b/c I don't have television and have been wildly busy, but this article will quickly bring you up to speed. Holmes rightly points out the blurred lines between Sheen's tv characters and his real-life personae, constantly revered as a bad-boy entertainer and not as a scary, unstable criminal with a history of domestic violence. The op-ed mentions Sheen's privilege as a wealthy, white man in the ways he is able to get away with such horrific behavior; as someone who works in domestic violence everyday, I can tell you the privilege of getting away with domestic violence is awarded everyday to abusers rich and poor, male and female, although Sheen's prestige certainly factors in. I also love the parallels Holmes makes to reality shows and society's growing acceptance of violence against women, especially women who are viewed as "deserving" of the violence, such as sex workers or those vying to marry a millionaire. Check it out!

There's lots of wild stuff going on in politics/the news as of late, from federal abortion funding to protests in the middle east. This article/news story from NPR on the perils of women asking for a raise was pretty interesting. As always, it's worth noting that the $.78 a woman earns on average vs. $1 every man earns is the current figure for white women; black ($.68) and hispanic and latin american ($.58) women on average earn much less. Also in the news this week was the sexual assault of reporter Lara Logan while covering the protests in Egypt. While this was horrific in itself, the way many mainstream newschannels have been talking about the incident, and of course, the comments by readers is enough to make you scream. This coverage by the LA Weekly clearly illustrates the point, paying much attention to Logan's looks and prior sexual activity.

This week I was finally able to watch Born in Flames (it's available to watch instantly on netflix!), a groundbreaking film by filmmaker/artist Lizzie Borden (which is an amazing pseudonym btw). Dubbed a sci-fi feminist movie, the film, Borden's first feature film, takes places in NYC, 10 years after a socialist revolution in the United States. Unhappy with the ad-lib the government is offering to women, several different feminist factions ultimately unite with "The Women's Army" to voice their concerns and interrupt bogus messages from the mainstream media. Shot in a grainy streetstyle, this film paints a realistic portrait of the differences that arise in social movements especially feminist movements and is an absolute must-see. It has a fabulous soundtrack, featuring Red Krayola, a stellar cast including legendary civil rights/feminist activist and lawyer Florynce Kennedy as well as Kathryn Bigelow, whose film the Hurt Locker won the Academy Award last year for Best Picture. there's no denying that i was a weird kid - and one of my weirdest attributes was probably thinking i had all these early memories of things that happened before i was born. john lennon's death is one of those things. maybe it was because john lennon was such a presence in my early childhood, maybe i remembered seeing news clips from 1980, whatever it was, i had this deep sadness for a moment that happened pre-me. in any event, this is a sweet video and john is the best beatle.

in other news, this article on the recent julian assange/wikileaks debacle is definitely worth the read. the author liz henry discusses why this should not be a feminism vs. free speech debate as the man may want you to believe.

"It Changed My Life" is a documentary by Lucy Thane, filmed during the Bikini Kill/Huggy Bear UK tour in 1993. I've looked far and wide for this film for about ten years and was never able to find it. You can imagine my surprise when I stumbled upon it yesterday online (while I should have been finishing the zine). At just about 30 minutes, it enables you to watch it at least 2 or 3 times in a row, mouth agape and tears in your eyes. It is mind-blowing to see BK (and the other bands: namely Sister George, Huggy Bear, Skinned Teen and the Raincoats) during this time period and to hear the amazement in the show-goers voices when they talk about seeing them live. From talking to girls in the bathrooms at shows (i.e. "For fuck's sake I'm a female and I can do this") to Kathi Wilcox listening to Ana da Silva's stories, this is such an important record of this magical time. Thank you to Lucy Thane for posting!

I highly recommend this interview with Angela Davis on Democracy Now from earlier this week. The always-inspiring Davis discusses Barack Obama's presidency, her vision of a more liberated US society and her new edition of Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, which includes essays by Davis on liberation, originally given at UCLA in 1969.

On the weekend of October 22nd through October 24th, A Broader Vocabulary Collective and QZAP present Girls to the Front Fest.

Girls to the Front Fest is a three-day event dedicated to the legacy and persevering spirit of the Riot Grrrl movement. This movement was an important moment in forming identities of fierce feminists, queer warriors and community minded leaders. Throughout the weekend, we will hold several events which include music, activism, poetry, discussions, art, workshops, and films. Opening night kick-off will feature a reading and discussion by Sarah Marcus, author of Girls to the Front: the True Story of the Riot GRRRL Revolution. Central to the event will be several concerts featuring female and queer bands from Milwaukee and surrounding cities. Girls to the Front will also host events featuring groups such as the Pedal Pushers Society, The Miltown Kings, and the Brew City Bruisers.

Shotgun Seamstress, which I reviewed issues 1 and 3 of in issue 10, is a zine "BY AND FOR BLACK PUNKS,QUEERS, MISFITS, FEMINISTS, ARTISTS/MUSICIANS, WEIRDOS AND THE PEOPLE WHO SUPPORT THEM." It's one of the best zines I've ever had the good fortune of reading and I especially like that it's current, not a treasure from the past. The editor, Osa Atoe, of The New Bloods among other projects, is a super-inspiring writer who also pens a column for Maximum Rock n Roll, which you can read here.

I most highly recommend her recent essay entitled "Feminist Power," which discusses the continuing relevance of feminism, despite what some people (the media, the new publisher of Venus, etc) may tell you, and not in the tired women-should-have-what-men-have sense. I also really liked her discussion of the concept of empowerment, which can be a contentious word, and one that I run into a lot in my work in domestic violence. She describes the concept in part as "Power to the people, not over the people," which I thought was a great way of expressing it. It's the type of article that can serve as a reminder to anyone in the feminist struggle when they are feeling over (or under) whelmed by the task at hand.

You can pick up some back issues of her zine at Stranger Danger Distro, the Lucy Parsons Center and lots of other places if you google it. Definitely check out her work if you're interested in feminism. Thanks so much to SS for her wise words!

french culture

I hate the way French culture is held in a lofty, hip realm and idolized in youth culture, or rather by companies that market to youth. Think of American Apparel's beret or this from Topshop. French-themed stuff is sure to sell, and the result is too often empty statements from kids like "j'aime poutine" or "je suis mime." But seriously, fetishizing a culture is always a bad idea. With that being said, I'm a bit guilty in enjoying French films as much as I do. I spent much of last winter using my friends Netflix account to dig deep into the film career of Anna Karina and her contemporaries. Here are some recommendations from yours truly:

Pierrot Le Fou is the story of Ferdinand and Marianne, a 60s Bonnie and Clyde who get into various escapade filmed along the gorgeous French Riviera. The film has some amazingly shot scenes, as is not unusual for Godard films, with some very interesting social commentary on the US and Vietnam as well as other political happenings of the time.

Cleo from 5 to 7 is an almost real-time film depicting one woman's afternoon as she anxiously awaits test results from her doctor. Existentialist themes abound as Cleo, a pop singer, reflects on the meaning of her life as she tries to occupy her time. Shot in black and white around Paris, the film has some very beautiful scenes. The opening shot of Cleo visiting a Tarot card reader is sweet and rlly draws you into the story.

Vivre Sa Vie, also by Godard, again stars Anna Karina, his then-wife, as Nana, a woman newly separated from her husband and trying to support herself in Paris. Shot as 12 individually titled black and white episodes, the film tells the tragic tale of Nana's life as she chooses a life of prostitution. Godard does a superb job of framing the social structures of the time and the choices available for single women. There are some seriously breath-taking moments, such as Nana crying in a dark movie theater and waiting on the streets for a trick.

A Woman is a Woman, also starring Anna Karina, is a much more light-hearted story of exotic dancer Angela, who wants to have a baby with her bf Emile. Emile does not want a child and to further complicate matters, Emile's bff Alfred, played by Jean-Paul Belmondo, also loves Angela. The scenes of Angela dancing are magnificent and the squabbles they get into are lol-worthy. I'm also really jealous of their apartment (similar to the interior dwelling shots in Pierrot Le Fou). An interesting take on modern romance and the desires of women.

In conclusion, I clearly have a major crush on Anna Karina and could seriously recommend mucho mas movies. Perhaps I'll have to continue this in the future. In the meantime, enjoy!
